The Reality of Education Quality in Rural Uttar Pradesh

Recently, on August 25, a video went viral of a seven year old Muslim boy being slapped by his classmates, the act allegedly being instigated by his class teacher in the village of Khubbapur in Uttar Pradesh. Later, the boy and his father were given much attention from the media along with the rest of the village, opening up the floodgates to complaints about the immoral punishment many children face in school daily in the name of “discipline”. Astonishingly, the boy’s class teacher had tried to justify to the media the cause of her actions, saying, “That day, I was feeling pain in my leg, so I asked his classmates to punish him. It was also a way to make him feel bad so that he would complete his homework.” Is this really what the purpose of education has come to?
