Abusive Security Forces in Kenya

In Kenya, the abuse of power is quite common. From the government to police, bribery, abuse and falsely imprisonment is seen in a range of situations, not based on gender, religion, or any other societal divisions. There are also a few severe cases where protesters have been killed without a worry about consequences, and the misusage of control is starting to get out of hand. One of the contemporary issues, in March, involved protestants being beaten up and killed by Kenyan police force as they used tear gas to blind the crowds and tore them apart after using physical violence. This is a major violation of human rights and authorities need to take charge and question as to why this kind of defiance was shown by the police, the protection of Kenya, and how come no one aided the protestors. The use of unnecessary force…

Deadly floods In Italy

On November 3rd , extreme heavy rainfall lasting for 4 hours led to around 200mm of precipitation on the streets of Tuscany Italy leaving 6 people dead and several missing. The governor of Tuscany, Eugenio Giani, thinks that the cause of such rainfall is due to climate change as the region has never experienced anything like this before. Teams from the National Civil Protection were sent to assist the flood victims of the area using boats and helicopters, and were able to rescue 30 families from Calcinaia and 6 families from San Minato.

How to help: make a donation to the Italian Red Cross who are working to save lives from the flooding in Tuscany and Veneto. By Prachi Pandit

The Effect Of a Heat Wave In a Mall vs. a Small Town A recent heat wave in Kolkata has forced many people to work in the sweltering heat with temperatures reaching 40 degrees celsius. This specifically had a drastic impact on the residents of Kasia Bagan, a small town in Kolkata. There had been a power cut in their village for more than 3 days, causing them to bear the heat without fans and electricity. On the other hand, a shopping mall located right next to them had not been facing any power cuts and was functioning smoothly. This infuriated the people of Kaisa Bagan causing them to storm the mall on April 16, 2023 in what was known as the "Quest Mall Protest". People in the slums had been dying of heat strokes while the mall right beside them had been fully functioning! Fortunately, a few hours after the…

The Journey of a 73 Year Old Activist Still Seeking Equal Rights In India

Maya Sharma is among the 21 petitioners, including same-sex couples, trans people and organisations, who are seeking marriage equality. Her plea, filed along with nine others, also wants the right for LGBTQ+ people to choose their families, even outside of marriage. Ms Sharma doesn't want marriage for herself - in fact, she "despises the concept" and walked out of a heterosexual marriage three decades ago. "The term marriage comes with a lot of associations", she says, preferring to call her relationship a "partnership".

Ms Sharma made a poster, which said "Indian and Lesbian", and stood in front of the iconic Regal Cinema in Delhi along with others. She was initially scared that people would recognise her, but was later emboldened by the impact the protests had on the country.

"For the first time, the word lesbian…

The Reality of Education Quality in Rural Uttar Pradesh

Recently, on August 25, a video went viral of a seven year old Muslim boy being slapped by his classmates, the act allegedly being instigated by his class teacher in the village of Khubbapur in Uttar Pradesh. Later, the boy and his father were given much attention from the media along with the rest of the village, opening up the floodgates to complaints about the immoral punishment many children face in school daily in the name of “discipline”. Astonishingly, the boy’s class teacher had tried to justify to the media the cause of her actions, saying, “That day, I was feeling pain in my leg, so I asked his classmates to punish him. It was also a way to make him feel bad so that he would complete his homework.” Is this really what the purpose of education has come to?

The Ugly Truth of 'Eve-Teasing' in India

Two girls fully dressed in their school uniform - tunics, salwar bottoms and scarves - rode their motorbikes on a near empty street in broad daylight, where they were harassed. Two men on a motorbike overtake them and one of them pulls away the scarf of one of the girls. Immediately, she loses her balance and her cycle moves right and collides with a second motorbike coming from behind. As she and the riders fall on the road, the 17-year-old is run over by a third motorbike coming from the opposite direction.

The ugly roots of this event lies within the fact that two fully grown men even had the thought of eve-teasing two minors. In fact, the Supreme Court of India had tagged the word 'eve-teasing' "deeply problematic". Some women activists even questioned the fact that the news reported the incident to…

The Karnataka Bandh Brings the State to a Standstill The people of Karnataka are suffering from a grave injustice. They are being forced to share their precious water with Tamil Nadu, even when they are facing a severe drought and water scarcity. The Cauvery River, which is the lifeline of millions of farmers and citizens, is being drained by the neighbouring state, leaving Karnataka dry and parched. The central government and the Cauvery Water Management Authority have turned a blind eye to the plight of Karnataka, and have ordered the state to release 3,000 cusecs of water every day for the next 15 days. This is a blatant violation of the rights and interests of Karnataka, and a betrayal of the federal spirit of the Constitution. The people of Karnataka have no choice but to protest against this unfair and arbitrary decision. They have called for a statewide bandh on September 29,…
